   St. Andrea church, Maderno

These are the interiors before the discovery of the crypt. We can notice that the main altar was at a lower level than today.

The crypt “ad oratorium” -  a crypt made up of small chapels - dates back to the 11th Century and was closed in 1958 due to the Counter-Reformation of St. Charles Borromeo, and brought to light in 1962. Anciently it has always been used as a reliquary to enshrine the remains of St. Ercolano, bishop of Brescia in the 6th Century. He died in Campione, a village nearby, where he went on a solitary retreat. Legend has it that people of the Riviera were arguing over where his remains should rest so they put them on a vessel, entrusted them to the Lake and they were finally  carried by the waves to the lakeshore in Maderno.

In 1825 the remains of St. Ercolano, the Patron Saint of Lake Garda, were then put in the new Parish church.
